The Animal Spotlight

Most penguins -- (which require a cold climate to live in) -- live in Antarctica, but there are a few different species of penguins that live in warmer climates.  Examples of different species of penguins include but are not limited to:  Emperor -- (largest known species), Galapagos, Little Blue -- (smallest known species), Adelie, Magellanic, Macaroni, and the Southern Rockhopper.  Penguins are aquatic, flightless birds.  They spend half of their lives in the water, and the other half on land.

A penguin's menu consists of krill, fish, squid, and other forms of sealife.  The penguins catch their food while swimming underwater.  Penguins are very smart, and can be trained to know their names and the food they are eating! I learned this fact from a trip to the Lehigh Valley Zoo.  I got to see a warm climate species of penguin, and the trainers called the penguins out by their names -- one by one -- and fed them their favorite seafoods! The penguins were very well-behaved, and did not fight over the food, either.

Fun Fact:  Did you know that cold climate penguins have to keep their babies eggs on their feet?! This is so the egg stays warm, and it will give the opportunity to hatch.  If the egg falls off of the penguins feet, it will not survive.  The mother and father penguins take turns caring for their egg, so the other can go out into the ocean to feed.
