The Animal Spotlight
now featuring:  the hamster

One thing we all know about hamsters is that they are rodents! Not the bad kind of rodent though, since they make great pets for practically any person of any age! They are low maintenance when it comes to keeping as a pet, since it mainly includes feeding and changing the litter.  At first, you can buy a cage ranging anywhere from $10-20 for a cheap cage, the food, which is only $5 for maybe a pound, the litter (which is only about $6-$8), and accessories if need be.  Hamsters groom themselves, but some cages include accessories when purchased, and some of the cages even come with a tiny brush!

The hamsters menu consists of a variety of foods, including dried food, nuts, berries, and fresh fruits and/or vegetables.  You should be careful of feeding your hamster fresh fruits or vegetables, though.  Too much of these types of foods can cause your hamster to get sick with wet tail.  I learned this the hard way when I had a Russian Dwarf hamster as a pet--(named "Chippy"), and I fed him too much lettuce.  Unfortunately, he did not live that long.  Maybe every month or so, give them a piece of fruit or vegetable for a rewarding treat.

The name "hamster" comes from the German word "hamstern", which means "to hoard".  This is because they have expandable cheek pouches used to hoard food.  They save the food in their cheek pouches until they want to eat the food, or bring it back to their nest.

Hamsters are very fun creatures to keep as pets! They are very cute, and funny to watch spinning in a wheel, or doing their usual hamster stuff!

Fun Fact:  Hamsters originated from the country Syria!

Here are some YouTube videos about hamsters that I enjoyed watching:

Here are some cute little fuzz balls with some musical props.  They are going to be on some type of drink commercial.  You can tell they are only chewing on those little plastic instruments! That would be cool to see a hamster really playing an instrument, though!
